Eating out

Les Caves de Madeleine – the first restaurant you come to on the left handside as you enter Place de Madeleine. This is our favourite eatery with excellent food at a reasonable price – including amuses bouche. One tip to remember is that the restaurant is actually open on Mondays when most other places are closed. (2, Place de Madeleine, tel. 04.67.28.17.08; http://lescaves-madeleine-beziers.com)

Le Taj Mahal – If you’re fed up of local cuisine and fancy a curry you could do far worse than Beziers’ Indian restaurant described by someone on trip adviser as ‘the best curry since Leicester 1983’! The décor is a little run-down / eccentric, but the waiter is charming and the food is cooked fresh and really tasty. Octopus – It’s Bezier’s most popular Michelin starred restaurant. Unassuming from the outside but cosy and intimate inside, this is everything you’re looking for in the quintessential French fine-dining restaurant, if you like that kind of thing. But pretty reasonable nonetheless. (12 Rue Boieldieu +33 4 67 49 90 00; http://www.restaurant-octopus.com)

Le Patio – As its name suggests the Patio has a large outdoor seating area which means it is incredibly popular during the summer. However the inside is pretty nice too and it’s got a good mid-range menu. (21 rue Francaise34500, Beziers; +33 4 67 49 09 45; http://www.restaurant-patio.fr)

La Massilia – This is a great buzzing restaurant – very popular for Sunday lunch. Menu on a chalk board delivered to your table is extensive and exciting, while the waiting staff are patient and friendly. One of our favourites.  (28 rue Paul Riquet34500, Beziers; +33 4 67 48 30 55)
